2026 AFL Draft Set to Feature Historic Indigenous Representation
Dougie Cochrane and Cody Walker are among the leading prospects for the 2026 AFL Draft, which is expected to take place next month. This draft could mark a significant moment for Indigenous representation in the league.
Since Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was chosen first overall in 2020, no First Nations player has been selected in the top 10. Cochrane is anticipated to attract a bid at Pick 1 from Essendon, while Walker is likely to be picked within the top five. Additionally, Caylen Murray, who also has Indigenous heritage, is expected to receive a bid in the top 10.
The AFL has acknowledged a decline in Indigenous players and is implementing measures to address this issue. Initiatives include the introduction of a third Category B rookie list spot for Indigenous players starting in 2027 and increased funding for the girls' Next Generation Academy program. The league aims to enhance opportunities for Indigenous talent and ensure their longevity in the sport.
