2026 Tahiti Pro May Face Conditions Similar to 2011's 'Code Red' Swell
The 2026 Tahiti Pro, scheduled for August 8-18, may encounter conditions akin to the notorious 'Code Red' swell of 2011, according to local photographer Tim McKenna. Following a six-week break, Championship Tour surfers will need to quickly adapt to the anticipated large swells approaching Teahupo'o.
McKenna notes that significant storms are developing in the South Pacific, which could lead to challenging weather and wave conditions on the first day of competition. He predicts that, similar to the 2011 event, the competition may need to pause for safer conditions. The initial forecast indicates strong south-southwest swells and adverse winds.
Historically, the 2011 event was halted due to extreme swell conditions, with local authorities restricting ocean activities for safety. McKenna anticipates that the 2026 event may face similar challenges, particularly on August 9. However, he believes that conditions may improve later in the week, allowing for a resumption of the competition.
