2027 AFL Season Begins with Key Matchups and Rematches

The 2027 AFL season is gearing up for an exciting start, with the first three games confirmed. Sydney will host Geelong at the SCG on March 17, marking the season opener.

Hawthorn will face Brisbane at the MCG on March 19, following a thrilling preliminary final in 2026 where Hawthorn lost by nine points. The Hawks aim to bounce back with new players Zach Merrett and Ben King. Although Hawthorn and Essendon expressed interest in a Round 1 matchup, the preliminary final rematch is expected to be the highlight of the Friday night fixture.

Fremantle will take on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium on March 18, while Richmond will play Carlton on March 20. The season will also feature North Melbourne against Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium on March 21. The MCG will be unavailable for AFL matches due to the 150th Anniversary Test between Australia and England, which concludes on March 15.
