49ers and Rams Prepare Differently for Historic NFL Road Trip

The San Francisco 49ers are currently en route to Melbourne, Australia, aboard a 16-hour flight for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams, scheduled to take place in over a week. This trip marks the longest road journey in NFL history, and the 49ers aim to acclimate to the local time zone ahead of the game.

In contrast, the Rams are adopting a different strategy. They plan to depart on September 9, arriving in Melbourne less than 24 hours before the game, which is set for 8:35 p.m. Eastern on September 10, or 10:35 a.m. on September 11 local time. Coach Sean McVay has not disclosed specific travel details, but the Rams believe that minimizing their time abroad is advantageous.

This approach is not without precedent; last year, the Rams arrived in London just a day before their game against the Jaguars and achieved a decisive victory. The NFL mandates that teams allow sufficient time for travel to avoid delays affecting the game. The Rams are pushing the limits of this requirement. As the league seeks to expand internationally, a successful short-term travel strategy could support the idea of regular overseas games without compromising competitive integrity.
