49ers Training Camp: Intensity Rises with Scuffles and Standout Performances
During the San Francisco 49ers' first padded training camp practice on Friday in Santa Clara, tensions escalated among players, notably involving Christian McCaffrey, who experienced several confrontations on the field.
McCaffrey faced a hit from a linebacker early in practice and later engaged in a scuffle with linebacker Dre Greenlaw after a catch. Other players, including Fred Warner and tight end Jake Tonges, also exchanged shoves, but no punches were thrown. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster noted that competitive situations can lead to such flare-ups, emphasizing it was a typical occurrence for the first day in pads.
Rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling had a strong showing, catching passes from multiple quarterbacks, while quarterback Brock Purdy successfully threw a touchdown during red zone drills. The practice also marked the return of second-year player Alfred Collins from the physically unable to perform list, and the team signed tight end Josiah Deguara and receiver Trenton Irwin to one-year contracts.
