Abbie Donnelly achieved a historic milestone by winning the bronze medal in the women's marathon at the European Championships held in Birmingham on Sunday, marking the first time a British woman has medaled in this event.

In a race that saw Donnelly finish with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, and 33 seconds, she trailed behind Hungary's Lili Anna Vindics-Toth and Finnish runner Alisa Vainio, who set a new championship record with a time of 2:22:26. Great Britain also secured a team gold, outperforming Italy and Spain, with Natasha Wilson finishing fifth and Rose Harvey in fourteenth place.

Donnelly's performance is noted as the best by a female British marathon runner at the European Championships since 1982. She expressed her joy at competing in her home country and acknowledged the support from the crowd as a significant boost during the race.
