Abhinav Bindra Reflects on Historic Olympic Gold 18 Years Later

Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooting champion, commemorated the 18th anniversary of his historic gold medal win at the Beijing Olympics, which took place on August 11, 2008. He became the first Indian to secure an individual Olympic gold by winning the men's 10m air rifle event with a score of 700.5.

In a post on X, Bindra described this achievement as the pinnacle of his sporting career. His victory not only ended India's long wait for an individual Olympic gold but also established him as a prominent figure in Indian sports. This milestone was later matched by Neeraj Chopra, who won gold in javelin at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Bindra's Olympic journey continued with two more appearances, where he finished 16th in London 2012 and fourth in Rio 2016. Beyond the Olympics, he earned seven Commonwealth Games medals, including four golds, and three Asian Games medals. His contributions to the sport were recognized internationally when he received the ISSF's Blue Cross in 2018. After retiring, Bindra has been active in promoting sports through the Abhinav Bindra Foundation Trust.
