ACC Joins Other Conferences in Banning Former Professional Athletes

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has joined the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference (SEC), and Big 12 in prohibiting former professional athletes from returning to college sports. This decision follows instances where players, previously on NFL training camp rosters, attempted to re-enter college football after being released.

The Big Ten and SEC were the first to enact this ban, with the Big 12 following suit on Wednesday. The ACC's Board of Directors has unanimously approved a resolution that mandates the enforcement of specific eligibility requirements for athletes seeking to return to collegiate competition after pursuing a professional career.

This decision was influenced by recent signings, including tight end Dae'Quan Wright by Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers after his release from the Cleveland Browns, and former Ole Miss defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, who was cut by the New Orleans Saints. The ACC's ban extends beyond football, also affecting former professionals in men's and women's college basketball.
