ACT Government Cancels Tuggeranong Ice Sports Facility Plans

The ACT government has announced the cancellation of plans for a proposed ice sports facility in Tuggeranong. The decision follows an evaluation that concluded the project would not provide value for money.

The facility was intended to feature two international-standard ice sheets for various ice sports, including figure skating and ice hockey. Despite discussions with project advocates, the government was unable to reach an agreement with the developers, who were expected to contribute significantly to the estimated $70 million cost.

Sports Minister Chris Steel expressed disappointment over the outcome, noting that the updated proposal presented unacceptable risks and required more than double the territory's initial investment. The $16.265 million allocated for the facility will now be redirected to upgrade other sporting infrastructures in Tuggeranong, with local sporting clubs invited to share their needs for future investments.
