Afghanistan Qualifies for 2027 World Cup; West Indies Face Qualifiers Again
Afghanistan has achieved automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup after defeating Ireland in Belfast. This victory places them among the top teams, including Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh.
The qualification rules state that the top eight teams in the one-day rankings as of September 30, excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will qualify directly for the tournament. Despite having two remaining ODIs against India, the West Indies, currently ranked 10th, are unable to secure a direct qualification.
The West Indies missed automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup and subsequently lost in the qualifiers, marking their first absence from a men's 50-overs World Cup. In the new format for 2027, the qualifier winner will advance directly to the second stage, while the second to fourth place teams will enter the Super Series. The tournament is set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with the full schedule yet to be announced.
