AFL Fans Association Expresses Disappointment Over Round 1 Fixture Changes
The AFL is set to alter its Round 1 fixture, ending the long-standing tradition of Carlton and Richmond opening the season. This change comes after criticism of the current Opening Round system, which has been in place since 2008.
Historically, regardless of their previous season's performance, Carlton and Richmond have consistently faced off in the first match at the MCG, drawing large crowds. However, reports indicate that the two teams may not play until later in the weekend, with the first fixtures likely featuring teams from northern states.
Ron Issko, president of the AFL Fans Association, expressed confusion over the decision, noting that recent matches between the teams have been competitive and well-attended. He emphasized the importance of fan engagement and the need for a balance between broadcaster interests and fan access to games, particularly regarding free-to-air coverage.
