AFL Finals Series: Analyzing Paths to the Grand Final

The AFL has launched its first-ever 10-team Finals series, presenting unique challenges for each finalist as they pursue the Premiership. The paths to the Grand Final on the last Saturday in September differ significantly among the teams.

Historically, only three teams have won the Premiership after finishing outside the top four, highlighting the difficulty for those in the Wildcard round. As the series begins, Fremantle, having finished the home and away season as Minor Premiers with only four losses, is set to face the Hawks in a Qualifying Final at Optus Stadium. A victory would grant them a week off and a chance to host a Preliminary Final.

However, a recent loss to Carlton has raised some concerns, particularly with the absence of key defender Brennan Cox due to a calf injury. Despite these challenges, Fremantle's position offers them the most favorable path to the Grand Final among the contenders.
