AFL Launches New Premier Competition in New South Wales

The AFL has introduced the Sydney Football League (SFL), a new premier competition in New South Wales, scheduled to start in 2027. This initiative aims to strengthen local football pathways and retain talent within the state, addressing concerns about players moving to other leagues.

The SFL will consist of nine clubs that have been licensed after evaluation by prominent figures in NSW football, including AFL Commissioner Andrew Ireland and Sydney premiership coach John Longmire. The league will feature four divisions: Senior Men's, Senior Women's, Under 19.5 Men's, and Under 20 Women's, and will align with existing competitions like the Talent League.

AFL COO Tom Harley emphasized the league's role in fostering Australian Rules Football in New South Wales, noting the increasing number of local draftees and coaches. The SFL will serve as the premier-level competition in the state, complementing community-based competitions while ensuring a robust foundation for future talent development.
