AFL Releases 2027 Gather Round Fixture Early Due to Contractual Agreement
The AFL has announced the 2027 Gather Round fixture ahead of the regular season, fulfilling a contractual obligation that allows fans and traveling supporters more time to prepare for the event in South Australia.
The opening match will feature Adelaide facing Brisbane at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night, while the weekend will conclude with a match between Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs. The fixture includes notable games, including a Friday night match with Collingwood and Sydney, and a Saturday night game expected to feature top teams.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas highlighted that the contract negotiations last year mandated the early release of the Gather Round fixture. He noted that the state government has some influence over the event, which is secured in South Australia until 2029. Additionally, a parade through Adelaide featuring players from nearly all clubs is planned for Friday night, coinciding with the Victorian school holidays.
