Africa Cup of Nations May Remain Biennial Amid Ongoing Discussions
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) is currently in discussions regarding the scheduling of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which may continue to be held every two years. This conversation took place during a strategy conference in Cape Verde, where Caf president Patrice Motsepe indicated that the matter is under review.
The Afcon has traditionally been held biennially since 1968, with a brief interruption between the 2012 and 2013 tournaments. However, in December 2025, Caf announced a shift to a four-year cycle following the 2027 Afcon in East Africa, a decision that faced significant backlash from national associations concerned about team visibility and commercial impacts.
As Senegal awaits the outcome of an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding their stripped title from January, the future of the tournament's scheduling remains uncertain.
