AI Successfully Designs New Viruses in Laboratory
Researchers in the United States have utilized artificial intelligence to design 16 new viruses that are fully functional and capable of replication in laboratory settings. This marks the first instance where entire genomes have been successfully created by AI.
The viruses, engineered to infect bacteria, do not pose any threat to humans. The study indicates a potential breakthrough in disease treatment, although experts have expressed concerns regarding the safety and security implications of AI-designed viruses.
The AI models, Evo1 and Evo2, were trained on genetic information from various organisms and were used to create bacteriophages, which specifically target bacteria. The research team synthesized the most promising designs, leading to effective results against E. coli. While this advancement could enhance infection treatments, it also raises questions about the potential misuse of such technology to create harmful pathogens.
