Alex Cora Plans to Sit Out 2027 Season
Alex Cora has communicated to Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations for the Philadelphia Phillies, that he plans to take the 2027 season off. This decision comes as the Phillies consider their managerial options.
Cora, previously under contract with the Boston Red Sox for $7.25 million through 2027, was fired in April but will still receive that salary. If he accepts a managerial role with another team, his new salary would be deducted from what the Red Sox owe him. Dombrowski had expressed interest in hiring Cora for the Phillies job after his departure from Boston, but Cora declined to pursue the position, citing a wish to spend more time with his family in Puerto Rico.
The Phillies have since appointed Don Mattingly as interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season after firing Rob Thomson. Mattingly, who has a contract through next year, led the team to a playoff berth but faced an early exit in the wild-card series against Atlanta. Meanwhile, the Red Sox secured a wild-card spot after their managerial change but also lost in the wild-card series.
