Alex Cora Reflects on His Dismissal and Relationship with Dave Dombrowski
Alex Cora, the former manager of the Boston Red Sox, realized he would be dismissed after receiving a text from chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. Breslow, along with Red Sox president Sam Kennedy and owner John Henry, traveled to meet Cora in Baltimore, prompting him to inform his family about the impending decision.
In a recent interview, Cora reflected on his relationship with Dave Dombrowski, who hired him as manager after the 2017 season. The two maintained a close bond even after Dombrowski's firing in September 2019, with Cora describing Dombrowski as a mentor. Cora was considered a candidate to replace Rob Thomson as manager of the Phillies but declined the opportunity, leading to the promotion of bench coach Don Mattingly.
Cora clarified that he did not believe his availability influenced Dombrowski's decision to fire Thomson, noting that the Phillies were struggling. He and his family opted against immediate management opportunities, with Cora indicating he might be available for a managerial role in 2028 after his contract with the Red Sox concludes.
