Alex Cora Will Not Manage in 2027
Alex Cora has decided not to manage in the 2027 season, as reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. He communicated this decision to Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Cora, who was previously under contract with the Boston Red Sox, was set to earn $7.25 million through 2027. After being dismissed by Boston in April, the team remains responsible for his salary. If he were to accept a managerial role elsewhere, his new salary would offset what the Red Sox owe him.
Dombrowski had expressed interest in hiring Cora for the Phillies job after his departure from Boston, but Cora declined to pursue the position, preferring to spend time with his family in Puerto Rico. The Phillies have since appointed Don Mattingly as interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season, following the firing of Rob Thomson. Mattingly's leadership helped the team secure a playoff berth, although they were eliminated in the Wild Card Series.
