Alex Manske Nominated for Courage Award After Heart Surgery
Penn State football's backup quarterback, Alex Manske, has been nominated for the 2026 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award, as announced on social media. This recognition highlights individuals who demonstrate courage on or off the field, particularly those overcoming significant challenges.
Manske underwent open-heart surgery in the spring after an electrocardiogram indicated potentially life-threatening issues. He had no prior symptoms and described the diagnosis as a surprise. The surgery involved inserting a plastic graft into his aorta, resulting in a nine-inch scar on his chest.
Following his recovery, Manske returned to participate fully in Penn State's fall camp and played in the season opener against Marshall, completing 9 of 14 passes for 102 yards. He joins other nominees, including Arizona State's Jordan Klemm, who has also shown remarkable resilience after suffering a stroke.
