Alex Manske's Journey Back to Football After Heart Surgery
Alex Manske, a transfer quarterback at Penn State from Iowa State, faced a serious health challenge shortly after joining the team. Following an offseason workout, he learned from the Director of Sports Medicine that his electrocardiogram indicated potentially life-threatening conditions, specifically a dilated aortic root and ascending aorta.
Initially shocked by the diagnosis, Manske had no prior symptoms and was concerned about the impact on his football career. He underwent open-heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic on March 16, where a plastic graft was inserted into his aorta. Despite being sidelined during spring practice, he received support from teammates and family throughout his recovery.
After completing cardiac rehabilitation in Iowa, Manske returned to Penn State a month post-surgery and resumed throwing in June. He has since participated fully in fall camp and has impressed coaches, earning the QB2 position ahead of the season opener on September 5. Manske expressed gratitude for the early detection of his condition, which could have had severe consequences if left untreated.
