Alex Marquez Urges MotoGP to Protect Young Riders Amid Increased Risks
During the Australian Grand Prix, Alex Marquez highlighted the increased risks faced by younger MotoGP riders due to a longer racing calendar and the addition of sprint races. He noted that six out of 22 full-time riders were declared unfit to race, with four suffering from injuries.
Marquez's comments come as MotoGP prepares to implement a new sporting format for 2027, which includes two qualifying sessions per round. He emphasized that the demands placed on riders have escalated, leading to a higher likelihood of injuries, particularly with the introduction of sprint races.
Marquez, who has experienced injuries himself, expressed concern for the future of younger riders like Fermin Aldeguer and Pedro Acosta. He suggested that the championship should focus on long-term development of its stars rather than short-term spectacle, advocating for a reduction in the number of sprint races to enhance safety.
