Alex McPherson's Game-Winning Kick Leads Auburn to Upset Over Georgia
In a stunning upset, Alex McPherson kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired, leading unranked Auburn to a 27-24 victory over No. 1 Georgia in Athens, Georgia. This win marks the second consecutive weekend where the top-ranked team has fallen to an unranked opponent, following Oklahoma's victory over No. 1 Texas.
Auburn entered the game as an 18.5-point underdog. McPherson's achievement is particularly remarkable given his health challenges; in 2024, he underwent surgery to remove his entire large intestine due to severe ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which caused significant weight loss and health issues.
Now fully recovered, McPherson expressed excitement about returning to form, stating he feels as strong as he did before his illness. He is in his final year at Auburn and may have the opportunity to join his brother, Evan McPherson, in the NFL next year, a prospect that seemed unlikely just two years ago.
