Alex Mirkov Secures Second AFL Opportunity with GWS Giants
The GWS Giants have decided to give ruckman Alex Mirkov another opportunity in the AFL, more than two years after he was released by Carlton.
Mirkov is anticipated to sign a two-year contract when the pre-season supplementary selection period begins, addressing the team's need for ruck support following Kieren Briggs' move to Richmond. He recently passed a medical examination with the Giants.
Standing at 210cm, Mirkov excelled in the VAFA with Old Ivanhoe after his delisting in 2025, which led to a chance with Williamstown in the VFL. During his time with the Seagulls, he averaged 32.7 hitouts and 11.7 disposals per game, earning him a return to the AFL. His last experience at the top level was in the 2021 Mid-Season Draft when he was picked by Carlton, but he was released three and a half years later.
