Alexander Chee's Commitment to His Creative Vision

Author Alexander Chee reflects on his experiences in the traditional publishing industry, which he describes as frustrating and often driven by metrics related to authors' audience sizes and trends.

After completing his MFA, Chee faced pressure from editors who preferred one of his two novel concepts over the other. Despite this, he remained committed to publishing his autobiographical novel, Edinburgh, first, even as the other project, The Queen of the Night, was eventually published 15 years later.
