Amanda Nunes Reflects on Sparring Session with Dustin Poirier
Amanda Nunes recently recounted a sparring session with Dustin Poirier that took an unexpected turn. While preparing for her 2017 title fight against Valentina Shevchenko at American Top Team, Nunes was asked to warm up with Poirier, but the session quickly escalated after he landed a jab.
Initially uncertain about the sparring match, Nunes noted that Coach Conan Silveira wanted Poirier to mimic Shevchenko's southpaw style. However, after Poirier's jab, both fighters recognized the risk of injury and decided to end the session early. Poirier later remarked that Nunes brought more intensity than he anticipated.
As Nunes prepares for her comeback against Kayla Harrison at UFC 334, Poirier has expressed his support for Harrison, citing her grappling skills as a potential advantage. Despite their past training together, he believes Nunes' striking power and experience will make the upcoming fight challenging for Harrison.
