Amazing Red Reflects on 2005 WWE Dark Match with CM Punk
In May 2005, CM Punk participated in a WWE dark match against Amazing Red, who recently recounted his memories of the event during an appearance on a podcast. Red was initially slated to be a squash opponent for another wrestler but learned that his role had changed after discussions with Punk and match agent Ricky Steamboat.
Red revealed that there was significant pressure on Punk to perform well, as it was perceived to be his last opportunity to secure a WWE contract. Despite this, Red faced challenges during the match, including being informed that many of his signature moves were already used by established WWE wrestlers. He felt the match did not go as planned, describing moments of confusion and mistakes.
After the match, Red attempted to thank Punk but instead had an unexpected conversation with WWE executive John Laurinaitis, who questioned his experience in larger rings. Although Red felt overlooked, he later reflected on the situation and recognized that both he and Punk were under pressure. Years later, when they met again, Red chose not to bring up past grievances, acknowledging that he had moved on from his earlier bitterness.
