American Gambits Dominate Opening Day of Global Chess League
The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League commenced its fourth season on Saturday at the Lalit Ashok hotel in Bengaluru, following an opening ceremony at the historic Bengaluru Palace.
On the first day of competition, the FYERS American Gambits achieved a strong start by winning both of their matches, placing them at the top of the standings. They first defeated the PBG Alaskan Knights, with Javokhir Sindarov overcoming former world champion Viswanathan Anand and Marc'Andria Maurizzi winning against Abhimanyu Mishra. The Gambits later faced the Triveni Continental Kings, where they secured additional victories from Nihal Sarin, Daniil Dubov, and Maurizzi, while the Kings managed only one win from Alexandra Kosteniuk.
The Continental Kings, who had previously lost to the Ganges Grandmasters, faced a challenging start despite their past successes in the league, having won the first two seasons and reached the finals in 2025. Meanwhile, the Alpine APL Pipers also began their season with a win against the CheQ Mumba Masters, highlighted by decisive contributions from Vidit Gujrathi and Humpy Koneru.
