American Mountain Guide Dies in Skiing Accident on Chilean Volcano
Todd Passey, a certified mountain guide from Utah, tragically died following an accident while skiing on Osorno Volcano in southern Chile's Los Lagos region.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 21, around 3:00 p.m. during an excursion led by two guides from Pioneros, accompanied by four tourists. After reaching the summit, Passey fell near the La Picada area on the volcano's northern slope. Authorities confirmed that no other individuals were injured in the incident.
His body was recovered the next day around noon through a multi-agency effort involving the Andean Rescue Corps, Carabineros, CONAF, and SENAPRED. The recovery operation faced challenges due to the difficult terrain, but with air support, the body was transported to the Cascadas sector for forensic examination. Passey's identity was confirmed by Wasatch Mountain Guides, where he served as a lead guide, and they expressed their sorrow over his passing.
