Amir Khan and Paul Smith Support Inquiry into Combat Sports Safety
Amir Khan, a former world boxing champion, and Paul Smith, a former British champion, are supporting a campaign aimed at raising £500,000 to investigate safety and welfare in combat sports.
The Global Fighters' Association (GFA), based in Liverpool, will lead the inquiry, which will focus on fighters' medical care, contracts, pay, and support after retirement. The investigation will gather evidence from various stakeholders, including fighters, doctors, referees, and promoters.
Smith highlighted the financial struggles many fighters face, noting that they often incur high medical costs while earning low wages. He emphasized the need for better protection and support for fighters, particularly those at lower levels. Khan, a co-founder of the GFA, expressed the necessity for an organization that fighters can rely on for assistance during and after their careers. The campaign will also support the GFA's plans to establish a trade union for fighters.
