Andrew Kuzma Scores First Goal for Penn State After Heart Surgery
Penn State hockey forward Andrew Kuzma achieved a personal milestone by scoring his first collegiate goal during a game against Canisius at Pegula Ice Arena. This moment comes nearly two years after he underwent open-heart surgery due to a previously undiagnosed heart condition.
Kuzma's journey began when a routine medical check revealed a bicuspid aortic valve, leading to surgery that sidelined him for his freshman season. After spending a year in junior hockey to regain his confidence, he returned to Penn State and scored twice in the game, contributing to a 5-1 victory.
Head coach Guy Gadowsky acknowledged Kuzma's perseverance and the support from his family and the athletic staff, particularly trainer Karlie Tronolone, who played a crucial role in his recovery. Kuzma celebrated his achievements with those who supported him throughout his challenging journey.
