Angels Acquire Ryan Watson from Red Sox

The Angels have announced the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Ryan Watson, who was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox. Boston designated Watson for assignment earlier this week, creating the opportunity for the Angels to add him to their roster.

Watson, 28, was selected in the recent Rule 5 draft and was initially taken by the Athletics from the Giants before being traded to the Red Sox for a prospect. He has previously transitioned from a starting role to the bullpen, achieving a 3.68 earned run average in the minors over 85 2/3 innings during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. However, his major league performance has been less impressive, with a 4.53 ERA over 55 2/3 innings with the Red Sox.

In addition to Watson's claim, the Angels have made changes to their bullpen by trading away several pitchers, which has opened up more opportunities for him. As a Rule 5 player, Watson cannot be optioned to the minors this season, but if he remains on the roster through the end of the season, the Angels will gain full control of his rights for future seasons. Meanwhile, designated hitter Jorge Soler has cleared waivers and is now a free agent after being designated for assignment.
