Angels Dismiss Pitching Coach Mike Maddux and Two Others
The Los Angeles Angels have made significant changes to their coaching staff by firing pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott, and bullpen coach Dom Chiti. The team announced these dismissals as they aim to improve their pitching performance.
Tim Leveque, the Double-A pitching coach, will take over as interim pitching coach, while Michael Wuertz will serve as the interim bullpen coach. Interim General Manager John Mozeliak stated that discussions with manager Kurt Suzuki led to the decision to make these changes with seven weeks left in the season.
Despite some individual successes among pitchers like Reid Detmers and José Soriano, the Angels have struggled overall, ranking seventh worst in MLB for ERA and having the highest walk rate. Maddux, who joined the Angels after the 2025 season, has a long coaching history, while Scott and Chiti also bring extensive experience to their roles. The organization has faced challenges with its pitching staff, which has relied heavily on less experienced players.
