Anthony Rizzo Discusses Ian Happ's Future with Cubs
Anthony Rizzo, the former first baseman for the Chicago Cubs, commented on the team's upcoming decision regarding outfielder Ian Happ as he approaches free agency. Rizzo indicated that the Cubs might consider retaining Happ in a limited capacity or potentially moving on from him entirely.
Happ, who has been with the Cubs since being drafted ninth overall in 2015, is under contract until the end of the 2026 season after signing a three-year, $61 million extension. In the 2026 season, he played 156 games, achieving a batting average of .218 with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs, although his performance showed a decline compared to previous years. Despite this, he maintained a strong defensive record, earning four Gold Glove awards.
Rizzo praised Happ's defensive skills and noted that his future with the Cubs could influence the team's strategy in the outfield. The Cubs, who finished the regular season with an 89-73 record, were eliminated in the National League Wild Card Series. As the offseason progresses, the Cubs have yet to announce their plans for Happ or the outfield, with decisions typically made after the World Series.
