Anthropic CEO Warns of AI Risks and Calls for Industry Caution
Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has expressed concerns about the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, labeling them as a potential threat to humanity. Speaking from the company's headquarters in San Francisco, he emphasized that the industry has not been transparent about the risks associated with AI technology.
Amodei noted that the pace of AI development is accelerating and called for a collective effort within the tech sector to slow down its progress. He mentioned that while Anthropic will continue to release new models, they will ensure thorough testing and involve independent evaluators to assess safety practices.
In light of these developments, Amodei supports federal regulation of AI, including the idea of a kill switch for risky AI systems. He acknowledged the challenges of regulating AI, especially in a global context where other countries may not adhere to the same standards. Amodei also reflected on the unusual nature of AI being developed by private companies rather than government entities, suggesting a need for joint governance among democratically elected governments.
