Aprilia and Ducati Address 850cc MotoGP Engine Concerns
During a press conference ahead of the Indonesian Grand Prix, Massimo Rivola of Aprilia and Gigi Dall'Igna of Ducati addressed concerns regarding the transition to 850cc engines for the 2027 MotoGP season. They faced questions about whether the costly engine change would effectively reduce corner speeds and enhance safety.
Both executives acknowledged that early tests indicate the new bikes are achieving lap times comparable to the current 1000cc models. Rivola noted that tire performance plays a crucial role in cornering, suggesting that the anticipated reduction in straightline speed might still be beneficial for safety.
Dall'Igna emphasized the importance of lowering the speed at which riders approach corners, asserting that reducing engine power is a necessary step for safety improvements. He expressed optimism that even if lap times remain similar, the changes could lead to a safer racing environment. Rivola also pointed out that the new tire supplier, Pirelli, may still influence performance levels in the upcoming season.
