Argentina Faces FIFA Sanctions for World Cup Violations
Argentina's football association has been fined $321,000 by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee due to multiple violations during the 2026 World Cup. The infractions include discriminatory chants and gestures from fans during matches against several teams, the display of the Falklands flag, and objects thrown onto the pitch that delayed kickoffs.
As part of the sanctions, Argentina will have a 50% capacity limit for their next two home matches, and $100,000 of the fine is designated for an anti-discrimination program. Additionally, a portion of the penalty has been suspended on probation.
FIFA also issued individual sanctions related to a brawl following Argentina's loss to Spain in the World Cup final. Leandro Paredes received a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine, while Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada faced bans and fines for their involvement. The Argentine Football Association plans to appeal FIFA's decisions.
