Arizona State Hockey Player Hospitalized After Collapsing During Practice
An Arizona State University hockey player, Matthew Mayich, collapsed during a practice session last Thursday morning and was subsequently hospitalized. As of Tuesday, he remained under medical care, according to a family source.
The university is looking into the circumstances of the incident, with Chris Fiscus, ASU's Vice President of Media Relations, confirming the investigation. The university has not publicly identified Mayich but expressed support for him and his family during this challenging time.
Emergency services responded to a report of a heat-related illness at Sun Angel Stadium, where the practice took place. Crews arrived at 8:31 a.m. and treated Mayich before transporting him to a local hospital. The region has been experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures reaching highs of 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Mayich, a sophomore defenseman, transferred to ASU from Clarkson University this offseason and was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft.
