Arte Moreno Sells Angels for Record $4 Billion Amid CBA Negotiations
Arte Moreno, the outgoing owner of the Los Angeles Angels, has finalized an agreement to sell the team to Stan Kroenke for a reported $4 billion, marking a record sale price for a Major League Baseball franchise.
This sale surpasses the previous record set by the San Diego Padres, which sold for $3.9 billion. The transaction occurs during ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, where owners are advocating for a salary cap, ostensibly to enhance competitive balance.
Despite the backdrop of uncertainty surrounding the CBA, the sale highlights the financial strength of MLB franchises. Moreno's initial purchase of the Angels in 2003 for $180 million resulted in an annualized return of approximately 14.4%, outperforming returns from recent NFL and NBA franchise sales. This suggests that MLB teams remain valuable investment vehicles, contradicting claims from owners about the need for a salary cap.
