Arthur Jantjies Triumphs in Inaugural Nelson Mandela Marathon
Arthur Jantjies from Hopetown won the inaugural Nelson Mandela Marathon in Cape Town on October 18, 2026, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 14 seconds.
Despite challenging weather conditions, Jantjies and Ethiopia's Bize Beyira Negasa, who won the women's race, both set new personal bests. Jantjies' victory marked his third title in Cape Town this year, following wins in the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon and the 10-kilometre Peace Run.
The marathon featured 4,500 participants, with the route showcasing iconic Cape Town landmarks. Negasa dominated the women's race, finishing in 2 hours, 36 minutes, and 42 seconds, nearly 4 minutes faster than her previous best. The event also included a half marathon, where Kenya’s Stephen Ngigi Kangethe and Ethiopia’s Weynalem Haftu Gebre emerged victorious in their respective categories.
