Asian Football Confederation Supports Infantino for FIFA Presidency
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially endorsed Gianni Infantino for another term as FIFA president during an extraordinary congress meeting held in Tokyo. This endorsement represents a notable change from the AFC's earlier stance, which had criticized Infantino for a breach of trust two months prior.
AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa publicly supported Infantino, emphasizing the commitment of the AFC to his leadership as he seeks re-election amid challenges from European factions. The AFC consists of 47 member associations, and while not all may align with Sheikh Salman's endorsement, it could play a crucial role in securing Infantino's mandate.
The FIFA election is scheduled for March, with the deadline for candidates to file against Infantino set for November 18. Infantino's prospects have been bolstered by FIFA's plans to increase financial contributions to member associations significantly. Sheikh Salman acknowledged past issues with Infantino but expressed optimism about moving forward together.
