Astros Designate Nelson Velázquez for Assignment Amid Injury Concerns
The Houston Astros have designated outfielder Nelson Velázquez for assignment and recalled infielder Raynel Delgado from Triple-A Sugar Land. This roster change comes in response to an injury to shortstop Jeremy Peña, who was hit by a pitch on his hand.
Manager Joe Espada confirmed that an MRI showed no structural damage to Peña's hand, although he remains sore. With Peña's status uncertain, the Astros needed to ensure they had a backup for the shortstop position, prompting the recall of Delgado.
Velázquez, who was claimed off waivers just ten days ago, has not recorded a hit in five plate appearances since joining the team. As he is out of options, he will be placed on waivers, where he may attract interest as a platoon player. This season, he has a batting line of .205/.273/.410, with four home runs, all against left-handed pitchers.
