Astros Opt Not to Retain Ryan Weiss
The Houston Astros have decided against exercising a $5 million club option for right-hander Ryan Weiss, according to reports. Weiss will receive a $500,000 buyout as he returns to free agency.
Weiss had previously played two seasons in South Korea with the Hanwha Eagles, achieving a 3.16 earned run average over 270 1/3 innings. In his last season there, he recorded a 2.87 ERA with a 28.6% strikeout rate across 30 starts.
Upon signing with the Astros, Weiss was expected to contribute to the rotation but struggled, posting a 7.62 ERA in nine appearances. He was designated for assignment in June after a disappointing performance, which included a 15.3% walk rate. Following this season, he will seek new opportunities, likely in the minor leagues or potentially overseas.
