Astros Release Nelson Velazquez to Pursue Opportunities Abroad
The Houston Astros have released veteran outfielder Nelson Velazquez, allowing him to seek opportunities overseas. Velazquez, 27, previously played for the St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Astros.
During his time with the Cardinals, Velazquez had a .722 OPS in 34 games but struggled with a high strikeout rate. After being designated for assignment by St. Louis in August, he was claimed off waivers by Houston. However, he managed only three hits, including two home runs, in 27 at-bats with the Astros, leading to his release after a short tenure.
Velazquez, who has a history of strong slugging numbers but also a high strikeout rate, is expected to continue his career overseas. While specific plans for his next team have not been disclosed, it is likely he has options lined up.
