Athletics Decline Options on Jeffrey Springs and Jeff McNeil
The Oakland Athletics have announced the decision to decline club options on pitcher Jeffrey Springs and infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil, resulting in both players becoming free agents.
Springs, who joined the A's from the Rays in December 2024, had a challenging 2026 season, finishing with a 6.18 ERA after allowing 35 home runs. His performance declined significantly, with a drop in strikeout rate and an increase in walks. The A's opted against a $15 million option for 2027, considering Springs' recent struggles.
McNeil, acquired from the Mets, had a subpar offensive season, hitting .264 with a wRC+ of 83. He made 88 starts at second base but did not meet expectations. The A's also declined his $15.75 million option for 2027, which included a $2 million buyout covered by the Mets. Both players will now explore opportunities in free agency.
