Athletics Designate Jonathan Ornelas for Assignment
The Oakland Athletics have designated infielder/outfielder Jonathan Ornelas for assignment after reinstating Zack Gelof from the 10-day injured list.
Ornelas, 26, joined the A's after opting out of a minor league deal with the Yankees in July. He appeared in six games for the Athletics, recording two hits and a walk, but also striking out seven times in 13 plate appearances. Due to being out of options, he has been removed from the roster.
With the trade deadline passed, Ornelas will be placed on waivers. His major league experience is limited, with a batting line of .200/.257/.231 over 71 plate appearances. However, he has shown improvement in the minors this year, achieving a .310 batting average and 11 home runs in 308 Triple-A plate appearances.
