Athletics Send Jonathan Ornelas to Triple-A Las Vegas
The Athletics have outrighted infielder Jonathan Ornelas to Triple-A Las Vegas following his designation for assignment on Monday. This move allows him the opportunity to elect free agency.
Ornelas was designated when Zack Gelof returned from a knee injury. He had recently joined the major league roster, making six appearances with four starts, primarily at second base and left field. In 13 plate appearances, he recorded two hits, a walk, and seven strikeouts.
This marks Ornelas' second outright assignment in his career, and he has a .200 batting average in the majors, still seeking his first home run. He has performed well in Triple-A this season, boasting a .310 batting average with 11 home runs across more than 300 at-bats with the Yankees' and Athletics' affiliates. If he accepts the assignment or opts for free agency, he may have another chance to play this year.
