Athletics Trade for Nate Eaton from Red Sox
The Oakland Athletics have made their first offseason move by acquiring outfielder Nate Eaton from the Boston Red Sox, trading minor league right-hander Jareth Rayo in return. This transaction was first reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Eaton, who turns 30 in December, struggled during his time with the Red Sox, posting a batting average of .160 in the majors this year. He was facing challenges in securing a spot on the 40-man roster, especially with several players returning from the injured list. The Red Sox were projected to exceed their 40-man roster limit, making this trade a step towards alleviating their roster congestion.
The Athletics' new president of baseball operations, Taylor Smith, who previously worked with the Red Sox, may have influenced the decision to acquire Eaton. Despite his lackluster performance in the majors, Eaton's speed and defensive skills could make him a valuable asset as a bench outfielder. Meanwhile, Rayo, the prospect acquired by the Red Sox, had a 5.50 ERA in 36 innings pitched in the Dominican Summer League this year.
