Atletico Madrid Reaches Agreement with Tottenham for Cristian Romero
Atletico Madrid has finalized a deal in principle with Tottenham Hotspur to acquire defender Cristian Romero. The agreement, which includes add-ons, is valued at around £34.2 million (€40 million) and features a 15 percent sell-on clause.
Romero, who has been linked with a transfer throughout the summer despite having a contract with Spurs until 2029, has made 124 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and receiving four red cards in the Premier League. Atletico has long admired the Argentine international, and it was anticipated that Tottenham would permit his departure if a suitable offer was made.
Despite interest from clubs like Inter Milan and Arsenal, Romero reportedly favored a move to Atletico. His recent performance has drawn mixed reactions from fans, particularly after he missed crucial matches due to injury and was criticized for attending a match in Argentina instead of a key game for Spurs. Tottenham is expected to incur a loss on Romero, who was signed for approximately £42 million from Atalanta in 2021.
