Atletico Madrid Reaches Agreement with Tottenham for Cristian Romero
Atletico Madrid has finalized a deal in principle with Tottenham Hotspur to acquire defender Cristian Romero. The agreement, which includes add-ons, is valued at around £34.2 million (€40 million) and features a 15 percent sell-on clause.
Romero, who has been linked with a transfer away from Tottenham throughout the summer despite having a contract until 2029, has made 124 appearances for the club over five seasons, scoring 12 goals and receiving four red cards in the Premier League. His departure comes after a challenging season, during which he faced criticism for prioritizing a match involving his boyhood club over a crucial game for Spurs.
Despite Tottenham's initial expectations of a higher transfer fee, they are set to accept a lower amount for Romero compared to the £50 million received for Luka Vuskovic earlier this summer. Analysts suggest that the financial dynamics between Premier League and European clubs have influenced the transfer valuation.
